Call for Contributions:
Spaces and Places

‘Spaces are not exterior to bodies; instead, spaces are like a second skin that unfolds in the folds of the body’ (Sara Ahmed, 2006).

 

We are pleased to announce the call for papers for the seventh issue of Cultivate. The theme of this issue is spaces and places.

 

Feminist thinkers have long posed critical questions about who controls, dominates, and defines the spaces we inhabit. Places have been and continue to be reclaimed or newly created as a source of feminist empowerment. As we navigate an increasingly complex world marked by cultural shifts, globalisation, and rapid technological advancements, these inquiries take on a heightened significance. Whether tangible or intangible, the places we occupy shape—and are shaped by—our identities, experiences, and power dynamics.

 

What does it mean to belong as feminists in these ever-evolving spaces?

 

There are a myriad of themes, approaches and perspectives that offer various ways of answering such a pertinent question. Some of these include:
● Architecture and landscapes
● Inclusion/ Exclusion
● Bodies
● Utopian/ Dystopian
● ‘Womans’ space
● Ecology

● Global feminisms
● Digital world
● Feminist imaginaries
● Public/ private sphere

 

Our 7th issue will contribute to the ongoing feminist discourses surrounding our space and place in the world. We are open to submissions from any self-identified feminists, both in and out of academia, and align with our journal’s intersectional feminist values. We accept academic essays as well as creative work. We encourage submissions in all mediums of art and critical thought, including but not limited to essays, photo essays, poetry, videos, illustrations.

 

Critical academic articles should be maximum 2000 words (plus references). Creative pieces should be accompanied by a statement and bio of maximum 350 words (combined). We allow for multiple submissions of up to one article and two creative works.
